BrightData Help

Introduction

BrightData makes it quick and easy for wind analysts to get access to reanalysis datasets.

Requirements

BrightData is built for desktop use and is not optimised for mobile. Modern browsers should be used in order to work effectively. Issues have been found when using Safari for Windows version 5 and earlier.

Datasets

BrightData currently provides the MERRA-2 and ERA5 datasets covering most of Europe from 1996 to present.

We currently cover most of Europe due to current customer demand, however we are open to expanding. Please let us know if you need certain geographical areas covered or if you have other reanalysis data needs.

How to use

  1. Click on the map selecting your location of interest.
  2. BrightData will retrieve the 4 nearest MERRA-2 and ERA5 datasets to that location.
  3. Mouseover each dataset location to see it's details.
  4. Click on icon to add dataset to your order list.
  5. Click icon again to remove.
  6. Set date range you would like dataset to cover.
  7. Input your email address. This is used for subscription verification and also to deliver a download link to the datasets.
  8. Click 'Order'.
  9. Verify the datasets you have ordered and click 'OK'.
  10. If subscription is out of date please click the email address in the verification step to let us know.
  11. Once ordered, you will receive an email within a few minutes containing a link to your ordered datasets.
  12. Click this link and download your datasets from the Orders page. The file naming convention is "[order number]_[reanalysis dataset]_[degrees north]_[degrees east]_[start date]_[end date].csv"

MERRA-2

The MERRA-2 dataset is produced by the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) and the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC).

ERA5

The ERA5 dataset is generated using Copernicus Climate Change Service Information. Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) (2017): ERA5: Fifth generation of ECMWF atmospheric reanalyses of the global climate. Copernicus Climate Change Service Climate Data Store (CDS), data access: https://cds.climate.copernicus.eu/cdsapp#!/home.

The data from April 2022 onwards will be the ERA5T on the reduced gaussian N320 grid. Before this, the ERA5T data on the reduced gaussian grid was not available.

Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use that may be made of the Copernicus Information or Data it contains.
